Up until 1899 the settlement of Kyogle lay within a huge cattle station with an area of 40,000 acres called Kyogle Station. Kyogle Station was purchased by a syndicate in 1901, and sub-divided into farms. 71 township allotments were also offered for sale. By 1904 every block was sold. An area was set aside for a showground, though rather small, the trustees carried on optimistically.
Late in 1908 the Kyogle Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society was formed, under the President and outstanding civic leader R.E. Alcorn. Vice Presidents - J.H. Allen and A.W. Campbell, Secretary - S.J. Sargent and Treasurer - W.J.Irwin. A date was chosen for their first Show. It was to be held on May 12th and 13th 1909, but it was not destined to eventuate that year, due to circumstances that still affect the Upper Richmond today, a tick outbreak at the Showground. The Show schedules were printed but the show was abandoned because of the dreaded cattle tick. A sports day was held on the Showground includung wood chopping. 1910 |
